The hometown track will be the site for a brief return to the Whelen Modified Tour for Woody Pitkat.
Pitkat, of Stafford, said Thursday he will attempt to qualify for the Modified Tour TSI Harley-Davidson 150 May 23 at Stafford Motor Speedway in a car owned by Don King. King fields a full-time team for James Civali of Meriden. "It's a 1-race deal right now," said Pitkat, who works full-time for King's racing team. "I'll be sponsored by TSI Harley-Davidson. They're pretty much the reason why I'm able to do it." Pitkat made 10 starts on the Modified Tour last season for Hillbilly Racing but was unexpectedly released by the team last December. He had 4 top-10 finishes for the team including a third career best third place on Aug. 23 at Mansfield Motorsports Park. Pitkat searched in vain for another Modified Tour ride the rest of the winter, and is still searching. "It's tough right now," Pitkat said. "There's nothing out there and if there is something you've got to bring a lot of money. I've been working on a sponsor. Sometimes they just lead you on and on and on. Hopefully if I can get something from this one I can find a ride, but even if you do get something, then it's a matter of, I've got the money, now who needs a driver?" Pitkat, who is competing full-time in an SK Modified and Late Model weekly at Stafford and in an SK Modified at Thompson International Speedway, isn't looking exclusively for a Modified Tour ride. He said he's talked to teams about a ride in the Camping World East Series. "I might do some races with [Camping World East team owner] Mike Olsen later in the year," Pitkat said. "We talked [during a test session] Monday at [New Hampshire Motor Speedway]. I think he wants me to run for him at the Fall Final at Stafford and maybe we can work out some other races."
